Our global efforts in R&D are focused around four strategically located hubs on three continents: Boston (United States), Geneva (Switzerland), Darmstadt (Germany) and Beijing (China). These locations have a concentration of scientific talent from universities and innovative companies, enhancing Merck Serono's ability to deliver high-quality biopharmaceutical products to patients who need them around the world.
By structuring our activities around highly connected hubs as centers of excellence, we strengthen internal networking and facilitate external partnerships.

Our hubs are complemented by additional specialized sites in eight countries comprising a total of approximately 2,500 R&D professional staff members. This diversity is a source of strength - bringing together different cultures and ways of thinking encourages original approaches to solving scientific and medical problems.
Merck Serono's network of alliances with other biotech companies and academic groups fosters a constant flow of innovation into the organization by enriching our disease knowledge and technological capabilities. The hub concept also facilitates approvals of new therapies because regulatory authorities often require local clinical trials.
