Crinone 8%® (progesterone gel) is a bioadhesive progesterone gel used in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) as luteal phase support for pregnancy. It is administered after transferring the embryo into the uterus and may be continued for up to 12 weeks until production of progesterone by the placenta has reached adequate levels.
A once-daily application of Crinone® 8% in a prefilled vaginal applicator ensures patient ease-of-use.
The role of progesterone in the body
Progesterone is needed to prepare the uterine lining for embryo implantation and helps maintain the pregnancy until the placenta is developed, a process known as luteal phase support. It is normally produced by the corpus luteum during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle and during the first 8 weeks of pregnancy, while the placenta produces increasing amounts of progesterone ultimately sufficient to support the pregnancy.
