Pergoveris™ (r-hFSH 150IU and r-hLH 75IU) is a new and unique therapeutic option for infertility in women due to severe gonadotropin deficiency. Pergoveris is a combination of follitropin alfa (r-hFSH) and lutropin alfa (r-hLH). It enables patients to benefit for the first time from two consistent and pure recombinant gonadotropins combined in a single vial.
Pergoveris™ completes Merck Serono’s portfolio of recombinant fertility treatments and addresses the previously unmet need for recombinant FSH and LH combined therapy.
The role of FSH and LH in the body
Human follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) is vital to the development of follicles in the ovaries. This is an essential step in the development of mature oocytes (eggs) capable of being fertilized. Luteinizing hormone (LH) is responsible for the final maturation and subsequent ovulation of the egg. It also provides support in the early stages of pregnancy. Pergoveris is used to stimulate ovarian function and the development of mature eggs in women with very low levels of FSH and LH. The administration of FSH and LH hormones provides the appropriate hormonal stimulation which culminates in ovulation.
